The Oceanographic Museum of Monaco

“The Temple of the Sea”

There is a palace dedicated to the consecration of the sea. It was created over a century ago on the brink of a cliff above the Mediterranean in the sovereign city-state of Monaco, with the goal of promoting the critical importance of maintaining the treasures in the marine ecosystem.

Prince Albert I of Monaco (1858–1922) had had a close connection with the water since his childhood. As a navigator and forefather of oceanographic science, he embarked on an extraordinary sequence of 28 scientific expeditions to dig into ocean research and, subsequently, to promote and share his discoveries with humanity.

The Oceanographic Museum of Monaco, one of the main focal points of Monaco, is a place entirely dedicated to the sea.

Prince Albert I of Monaco was a navigator and precursor of Oceanographic Science.

The first maps of the world's ocean depths were created under the prince's direction, and they remained valid until 1944. He used to write about his trips' findings, which were published under the title The Navigator's Path. On September 10, 1889, he became the Principality's king, and he was forced to focus on the obligations that came with the job.

The Oceanographic Museum

Prince Albert I established the Oceanographic Museum of Monaco to promote the study of the collections and discoveries made during his many trips. Under its founder's credo, "to know, love, and protect the oceans," the museum comprises 6,500 m2 that is available to the public and now receives over 700,000 visitors every year.

The palace that houses the Monaco Oceanographic Museum is a magnificent architectural wonder. The architect Paul Delefortrie designed it in the French neoclassical style between 1899 and 1910. Its construction required 100,000 tons of stone from the La Turbie area. The enormous structure descends the cliff for 85 meters, almost touching the Mediterranean Sea.

Aquariums

There are 6,000 specimens of Mediterranean and tropical fish living in conditions that accurately mimic their natural habitat in the tanks of the Monaco Oceanographic Museum, as well as 200 variety of invertebrates and roughly 100 types of coral. The museum has an ecological character, and it fills the tanks with sea water, giving visitors the impression that they are truly immersed in the vastness of the undersea world.

Turtle Island in the Museum.

Turtle Island

It is a zone of environmental mediation for this species, which has lived in the world's oceans and beaches for 150 million years. Based on the museum's experience, there is a health center that rescues, cares for, and releases sea turtles; it also functions as a network connecting numerous groups that specialize in turtle conservation.

Several species live in the Shark Lagoon, a giant aquarium with a unique coral ecosystem.

Shark Lagoon

Several shark species are visible from four distinct angles of view in a massive, six-meter-deep fish tank with 450,000L of sea water. The Djibouti reef, one of the first of its kind to be established with human intervention in 1989, grows in the same area. This location is devoted to the importance of sharks and reefs in maintaining the health of the waters.

Other Attractions in the Museum

Several of its display halls focus on the history of undersea exploration, marine animals, and natural history. Visit Commander Jacques-Yves Cousteau's undersea research equipment—he was the museum's director for almost 30 years—or the Prince Albert Ist Room, which is devoted to the life and work of Prince Albert I, who also created the Institute of Oceanography in Paris.

The exhibition by artist Mark Dion is quite extraordinary; he created a monumental cabinet to house a world of museum curiosities ranging from libraries, skeletons, fossils, texts, maps, and diverse objects; among them, Karl Heinrich Klingert's diving suit, which was developed in 1797, and with which its inventor remained several minutes underwater, 12m deep.O
