Beausoleil's Beauty, Upper Monte-Carlo

In this article, you will learn more about the history of Beausoleil and its relationship to Monaco.

The boundary between France and Monaco is difficult to locate. It is entwined with the French town of Beausoleil and the Principality like a thread. Shop signs and facades are sometimes the only clues to your location. Beausoleil's population is primarily made up of immigrants whose ancestors, the city's earliest occupants, arrived more than a century ago and were not natives. But we must begin at the beginning.

With the sun, an olive tree, and the sky, the Beausoleil Coat of Arms reflects the beauty of its surroundings. It reflects the Mediterranean paradise in which the town plays an important role. Sky blue, silver, and gold are prominent colors on the coat of arms. What an uplifting motto: "Lucet Omnibus"—it shines for everybody!

The construction of the famed Monte-Carlo Casino, followed by the Hôtel de Paris and other attractions that secured the Principality's success and appeal among affluent travelers at the time, was the beginning point for the development of Beausoleil. While Monaco was developing and flowering, the reverse was true in Piemonte, an Italian region. A cholera pandemic struck the province of Cuneo in 1884. Famine overtook the region, forcing the indigenous inhabitants to evacuate. Some went to America, but the majority settled in France, particularly in the Alpes-Maritimes.

People were willing to do any work in order to live. Monaco was a large building site with a significant demand for extra employees. The Piedmontese therefore settled in the Carnier area, Monaco's nearest neighbor, which still serves as a border between the Principality and France.

There was an olive oil production issue at the time, and prices fell as a result. The majority of landlords, notably the Blanc family, were looking for a strategy to keep rates high. The development of a new city, which would become "upper" Monte-Carlo, was therefore begun.

Camille Blanc introduces Beausoleil

The concept of constructing a new metropolis was fantastic, but no one had been put in charge of it. The La Turbie municipal council, which controlled the Carnier territory, was divided into two camps: one in favor of the proposal and one in opposition. After all, the building of a new city entailed the city's separation from La Turbie. Camille Blanc entered the picture at that point.

He was born in Paris in 1847, the son of François Blanc, the founder of the Monte-Carlo Casino and the SBM firm. Camille inherited his father's role after his father died in 1887.

As Mayor of La Turbie, he petitioned the French government to split the new city from the commune, and he was granted permission.

On November 12, 1903, the local council chose to name the new city Beausoleil, which translates as "beautiful sun." Other choices were Montfleury and Beauséjour. Beausoleil was also known as Monte-Carlo Supérieur (or Upper Monte-Carlo). The people of the Principality, on the other hand, were outraged by any association with the Monte-Carlo appellation. Camille Blanc established the Monte-Carlo Supérieur real estate firm in 1898. As a result, it was predicted that the new metropolis would become the second Monte-Carlo.

Emile Loubet, President of the French Republic, signed a decree establishing the new municipality of Beausoleil on April 10, 1904. Camille Blanc was elected mayor on May 8, 1925, a position he held through 1925.

Expansion of the city

Beausoleil achieved amazing growth in both demographic and economic development in just a few years. Its population nearly doubled between 1904 and 1921. The town was growing, and so was its infrastructure. First, there was a school, then a mayor's office, two casinos, hotels... The First World War halted construction, which was resumed later in 1930.

During this period, numerous exquisite structures were built in Beausoleil, which are now among its distinguishing characteristics and significant attractions. One of them is St. Joseph's Cathedral. The foundation stone was placed on February 16, 1913. However, it was not open to the public until ten years later. This is also the only large church in the area with the name St. Joseph.

Paul Lajoie, an architect and member of the Municipal Council, designed the structure in the neo-Romanesque style. Its beauty stems from the unique harmony of its proportions. The church's architectural composition is unusual: it consists of a main structure and a high tower with a gable roof capped by a cross. It is especially known for its massive stained-glass windows, which were created by French glassblowers — the Maumejean brothers and Charles Champigneulle. On March 15, 1936, the church was elevated to the rank of cathedral. On March 19, the Feast of Saint Joseph, Beausoleil residents enjoy an annual event in honor of their patron saint.

The Riviera Palace

The most renowned landmark in Beausoleil is the Riviera Palace hotel, which gives the greatest panoramic views over Monaco and the entire Côte d'Azur. CIWL (Compagnie Internationale des Wagons-Lits) commissioned the structure, which was completed by architect Georges Chédanne. Its construction began in 1898, and it features an eclectic style reminiscent of the Belle Epoque. The facades are painted with a unique ochre hue, and the balustrades are adorned with blue majolica.

Its major embellishment is the Winter Garden, which is approximately 900 m2 in size and has subtropical flora in bloom as well as an exquisite rockery. Gustav Eiffel, the world-renowned architect, created the Winter Garden's dome. The Riviera Palace was listed on the list of outstanding structures of architectural significance that are part of France's historical heritage in 1989.

City Market

A market scarcely qualifies as a tourist destination. It is nonetheless one of the most popular spots in Beausoleil. Famous Monaco chefs are known to shop here for groceries.

Lower La Turbie had only a few businesses and market stalls prior to the development of Beausoleil. The municipality could not afford to purchase a market area in the city center at the time because the price per square meter was too expensive. The only option was to find someone to build a market on their own dime. Augustin Jean Trabut, a businessman and factory owner, was the guy for the task.

The massive market first opened its doors on November 1, 1902. It had a surface area of 750 m2 at the time. The structure was composed of stone, iron, and wood. The land parcel was to stay in the concessionaire's control 30 years later, according to the municipal agreement.

The city, however, maintained the right to redeem the property for its original purchase price. After 30 years, the municipal council decided to use its authority, which was predictably opposed by the owners because the value of the site had skyrocketed during this period. The city launched a lawsuit and prevailed in court. Its property became the market.

There are some breathtakingly lovely spots to see in Beausoleil. You may take a stroll around the city's lovely streets. To properly comprehend Beausoleil, though, one must gaze into the eyes of its inhabitants. A city is more than its buildings, squares, and parks.

First and foremost, it is about the residents. When you go through the streets of Beausoleil, you will be met by warm grins, children's laughter, and neighbors discussing current events. Life is in full motion here, perhaps not as smoothly as in Monaco, but pleasant and sunny, as the city's name suggests.
